Waterway pollution from stormwater runoff presents an increasing environmental challenge by transporting nutrients, PFAS, pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants into reservoirs and waterways.

This project aims to develop specialised biochar materials produced from agricultural biomass under oxygen-limited conditions for use in water treatment and environmental remediation applications.

By selecting suitable feedstocks, optimising production conditions, and incorporating mineral additives, we aim to enhance contaminant adsorption and retention performance. The developed biochar materials are intended for integration into stormwater filtration systems and catchment management approaches.

The project also explores opportunities to convert agricultural residues into value-added environmental products while supporting carbon storage and circular economy outcomes.

Project Objectives

  • Develop specialised biochar formulations for water treatment applications.

  • Evaluate contaminant removal performance for nutrients and emerging pollutants.

  • Assess integration into stormwater treatment systems.

  • Investigate scalability and environmental feasibility.
